Chapter Fifteen

I sit up, startled. I’m in my room but the feeling of being somewhere else lingers on my skin. The essence of someone else floats by my nose. I remembered a conversation, snippets. I grab one of the journals I had been reading before bed and wrote down what I remembered.

“You’re late.” A man’s voice. I remembered this but could not place it. A whisper out of reach, too far down a long hallway.

“I show up whenever I want to, human. Why are you calling me?” Certainly Andras. Clear. I saw him in my dream.

“I need you to hold up you end of the deal. Stop her.” I paused and looked at the words. Stop her. Was I the her to be stopped?

“One cannot simply undo years and years of sin eating tradition. It takes time. I am still looking for the one. Not to mention, having to play with your little scape goat and make it look like he did it. Do you know how hard that is for me to do?” Scape goat. Had to be Henry.

“I don’t know. How hard is it for a demon to do terrible things? Doesn’t seem that hard to me.” I enjoyed the wit of this man but he spoke to Andras like someone he knew.

“I don’t think she’s going to be very happy when she finds out what you’ve done for her.” The demon matched the wit and cackled with a hoot of laughter.

I got the sense the man hated that sound, as much as I did. I was able to walk around in my dream but I could only see Andras. He was confined within a circle. He looked completely harmless. A strange looking bird man with a shaggy wolf. They looked like any other yuppy strolling through the park, taking their strange mutt they rescued from the local shelter on a walk to feel the sun. I knew he was more dangerous; however, I was interested in why this mystery man had made a deal with him. For me, I assumed again. And why would I not be happy about it?

“Why did you summon me?” Andras spoke again, slowly, as if the man were a small toddler.

“I just wanted to know when it would be done.” The man’s voice is raised. He was getting impatient.

“And as I have mentioned before, I can’t do something like that. I have to find another member of the family, a bloodline. She doesn’t have a lot of family hanging out.”

“What about her mother?” I laughed at this the exact same time Andras did.

“The mantle gets passed on to those it has chosen. If she were to die tomorrow, whoever shared blood with her would wake up with her powers. But you are asking me to find that person now. Difficult task. Until I can do that, she will continue to do her job.”

“Continue? She’s already started? How could that happen?” The man’s voice rose in anger. I hated yelling. I shrunk back.

“A friend of her mother’s or something.
